Who are the Duck Breeders?

March 24, 2007 on 11:48 am | In | No Comments

Aside from chicken breeding, duck breeding is another popular poultry farming industry. Ducks are bred primarily for either their meat or their eggs. Whatever the purpose is in order to be a successful in duck breeding, it is necessary to be able to choose the proper duck breeder.

The most important factor to consider in choosing a duck breeder is the body weight of the duck. This is a highly heritable trait in ducks and individual ducks with this trait should be selected once they reach marketing age. Other factors to consider when selecting a breeder duck is the duck’s rate of feathering, body conformation, fertility and egg production, hatchability of the duck’s eggs, the ducks productive life and the feed consumption of the duck.

Since the heritability of these other factors are not very high, it is necessary to have a system of family selection for your duck farm. To do this properly, you need an identification system and accurate data recording system that you should implement for a long period of time. You will also need trap nests. Trap nests will allow the duck to enter and lay eggs but will inhibit the bird from leaving the nest. In this way, you will know that an egg as been laid and, furthermore, by the identification you have attached to the duck, you can also identify the bird that laid the egg.

This data should then go into your recording system. Your recording system should contain such important information about every individual duck such as the number of eggs they have laid, the number of ducklings that hatched from those eggs, the number of ducklings that were marketed and the age of marketing at a suitable weight.

When purchasing your duck breeder, it is important to make sure that the duck breeder you are getting is still young and vigorous. There are a number of ways to determine the age of the duck breeder. A younger duck will often sport brighter coloring around its leg and bill while older ducks will have dull coloring in those areas and will have a harder skin. Young ducks have breastbones that are pliable and gristly. In old ducks, the breastbone is rather hard. A young duck’s windpipe is also softer and more easily dented while an older ducks windpipe is more difficult to dent.

For the best genetic progress, it is best to aim fro a minimized generation interval between generations of your duck breeder. First year ducks and drakes are the best though birds that are younger than six months should not be mated.

The ratio between duck and drake is largely governed by the age, the breed and the method of management of the ducks. When housed intensively, it is expected that fewer ducks will be mated to a drake. For a heavy duck breeder such as the Muscovy, a ratio of five ducks to a single drake is preferred. For a lighter duck breeder such as the Khaki Campbell, ten ducks to one drake will suffice.

The number of ducks you mate will greatly depend on the number of ducklings you are aiming for. Most duck breeds can produce approximately 100 marketable ducklings in every season. Some strains can produce even more. When mating, to give more time for the ducks and the drakes to settle down, it is advisable to mate the birds 2 weeks before their eggs are collected for setting. This will ensure that proper mating will occur and that high fertility eggs are laid. For the most part, a smaller number of mated birds housed together will yield better results, however, for economical reasons, most commercial duck breeders practice mass mating’s.

With a poultry farm’s specialization, one must take into account the right breeds of poultry to raise. When the poultry farm is specializing as a main source of meet, poultry breeds such as Ross, Arbor Acres and Peterson chickens are good for such purposes. The meats they produce are just the right ones. However, for the poultry farm that is specializing on eggs, birds such as the Leghorns and the Rhode Island Reds are very good at laying quality eggs. A poultry farm could also go both ways, meaning specializing on the poultry’s meatiness and quality eggs. There are also specific poultry breeds for these purposes.

Poultry farming has indeed gone a long way. Technology also plays a great part of the industry. A poultry farm is not only limited to meat and eggs as products. There are many other things a poultry farm could produce. If a poultry farm happens to raise goose and ducks, then the feathers of these birds form an industry all on their own. That is because the feathers of ducks and goose can be used to stuff pillows and make jackets. Ever heard of the term down-filled? This is done to protect the hens (females) from injuries caused by natural mating with the bigger toms (males). Most of the domesticated turkeys are fed with grains. Also a turkey can live an average of 10 years. They can go for a mile just by gliding without even flapping their wings. They can fly but only for short distances.

Geese. These domesticated birds are really originally not capable of flight. They are bred in order to provide meat. They come in different colors—gray, white, or somewhere in between. They also come in different sizes. They don’t need that much for their housing. You can just build them a simple shelter to protect them from any bad weather, rain and wind.

Gineafowl. These birds originated from Africa and are related to other poultry birds such as turkeys and partridges. They can lay twenty five to thirty eggs. Their eggs have a thick shell, and are small and dark. They are highly vulnerable to dampness. They are also pest controllers. They eat insects for food. They come in various colors such as white, slate, chocolate, purple, lavender, coral blue, pewter, bronze and many more.
